The Perfect Autumn Weekend in North Wales: Walks, Pubs & Places to Explore Near Moel Famau

Golden hills, crisp countryside walks, cosy cafés and the promise of a hot tub waiting for you at the end of the day.

If that sounds like your kind of weekend, autumn in North Wales might be just what you need.

Here in the Clwydian Hills, there’s something particularly lovely about this time of year. The scenery begins to change, the air feels fresher and there’s every excuse to slow down and enjoy the simple things.

Whether you’re travelling from Manchester, Liverpool, Chester or somewhere a little further afield, you don’t need a week away to enjoy a proper change of scenery.

With beautiful walking routes, historic market towns, independent cafés and welcoming country pubs, the area around Moel Famau has plenty to offer for a short autumn escape.

And with Famau Cabins as your base, you can enjoy the best of the countryside before returning to your own private hot tub and a cosy evening in.

Here’s how we’d spend a lovely autumn weekend in our little corner of North Wales.

Friday: Arrive, Unpack and Let the Weekend Begin

There’s something wonderful about leaving the working week behind and heading towards the countryside.

As you make your way into the Clwydian Hills, the busy streets give way to open fields, winding country roads and views of the surrounding hills.

That’s when the weekend really begins.

Once you’ve arrived at Famau Cabins, unpack your bags, put the kettle on and settle into your home for the next couple of days.

Our three self-catering cabins offer everything you need for a simple, comfortable countryside stay, including kitchen facilities, WiFi, a TV and your own private hot tub.

You don’t need to plan anything elaborate for your first evening.

Pick up your favourite food on the way, make something easy for dinner and enjoy a quiet night together.

Or, if you’d rather head out, there’s a local pub within walking distance of the cabins.

Then it’s back to your cabin for a relaxing evening, perhaps with a glass of something nice and a soak in the hot tub beneath the autumn sky.

No early alarm needed tomorrow, unless you want one!

Saturday Morning: Explore Moel Famau and the Clwydian Hills

After a slow breakfast and a morning coffee, it’s time to head outdoors.

One of the biggest reasons people visit this part of North Wales is the scenery, and autumn is a particularly lovely season to explore it.

Walk to the Summit of Moel Famau

Standing at 554 metres, Moel Famau is the highest point in the Clwydian Range and one of the area’s best-known landmarks.

The remains of the Jubilee Tower sit at the summit, where walkers can enjoy wonderful views across the surrounding countryside on a clear day.

It’s a fantastic place to appreciate the beauty of the Clwydian Hills, especially when the landscape is beginning to turn golden.

There are different walking routes to choose from, so you can plan something that suits your experience, fitness and the weather.

For official visitor information and walking routes, take a look at Natural Resources Wales’ Coed Moel Famau guide.

Our tip: Autumn days are getting shorter, so set off with plenty of daylight, pack suitable footwear and waterproof layers, and check the forecast before heading into the hills.

Prefer a Gentler Walk?

You don’t have to climb to the summit to enjoy the area.

The woodland trails around Coed Moel Famau are another lovely option, with changing leaves, peaceful paths and plenty of opportunities to stop and take in the surroundings.

Whether you’re looking for a proper hike or a relaxed morning stroll, there’s something particularly refreshing about spending time outdoors at this time of year.

And after a good walk, you’ve certainly earned a lovely lunch.

Saturday Lunchtime: Coffee, Cake and Something Delicious

One of our favourite things about exploring North Wales is discovering the independent cafés and food businesses dotted around the area.

Whether you’re after a warming coffee, homemade cake or a proper lunch, there are some lovely places to stop.

Tŷ’r Felin Café, Loggerheads Country Park

If you’re heading towards Loggerheads, Tŷ’r Felin Café is a lovely place to stop.

Situated within Loggerheads Country Park, it’s a great option for combining a woodland walk with something delicious to eat.

Expect a welcoming atmosphere, breakfast and lunch options, cakes and locally sourced produce.

It’s also a great excuse to spend a little longer exploring the country park.

Café R, Ruthin Craft Centre

If you’re planning to explore Ruthin, Café R at Ruthin Craft Centre is another option worth considering.

It’s an ideal stop for coffee or lunch while visiting the exhibitions and discovering the town.

More Local Favourites

We’ve also put together a separate guide featuring seven lovely cafés and coffee shops around Famau Cabins, including favourites in Mold, Ruthin and the surrounding villages.

Continue exploring: Our Favourite Places for Coffee, Cake & Lunch Near Famau Cabins.

It’s a useful one to save before your visit, especially if you enjoy finding independent places to eat.

Saturday Afternoon: Discover Ruthin, Mold or Denbigh

After lunch, why not spend a couple of hours exploring one of our nearby market towns?

Each has its own character, with independent shops, cafés, historic buildings and plenty of reasons to wander.

Ruthin: History, Independent Shops and Local Charm

Ruthin is a lovely town to explore at a relaxed pace.

With its historic streets, independent shops and traditional buildings, it’s a great place for an afternoon wander.

You could visit Ruthin Craft Centre to discover contemporary craft and exhibitions, browse the shops or stop for another coffee.

For anyone interested in local history and heritage, there’s plenty to discover around the town centre too.

Mold: Cafés, Shops and a Relaxed Afternoon

Mold is another lovely choice for a couple of hours out.

Its town centre is home to a mixture of independent shops, cafés and places to eat, making it a good destination for browsing and picking up a few treats for your evening back at the cabin.

If you’re visiting on a market day, it’s also worth exploring the stalls and local produce.

Denbigh: A Little Local History

If you enjoy historic places, Denbigh is well worth considering.

The town is known for its medieval heritage and impressive castle, along with traditional streets and views across the surrounding area.

Denbigh Castle is a fascinating place to discover more about the area’s history. Check Cadw’s current visitor information before planning your visit, particularly outside the main summer season.

Our tip: You don’t need to fit all three towns into one afternoon. Choose the one that appeals most and enjoy exploring without rushing.

After all, you’re on holiday!

Saturday Evening: A Country Pub or a Cosy Night In?

After a day of walking, exploring and discovering local favourites, there’s nothing better than slowing things down.

And there are two equally lovely ways to spend your Saturday evening.

Option One: Enjoy a Local Country Pub

Autumn is the perfect season for a cosy pub meal.

Think hearty food, a relaxed atmosphere and somewhere warm to settle into after a day in the fresh air.

One of our favourite local spots, and somewhere we always recommend to our guests, is The White Horse in Cilcain.

Situated in our local village and within walking distance of Famau Cabins, it’s a lovely place to enjoy a drink, a bite to eat and a proper village pub atmosphere without having to venture far.

There are also plenty of other welcoming pubs around the Clwydian Hills and nearby towns, but having The White Horse practically on our doorstep is a real bonus!

If you’re planning to visit, we’d recommend checking their latest opening times and food service availability, and booking ahead where necessary, particularly at weekends.

Option Two: Stay In and Enjoy Your Cabin

Of course, you might prefer to head straight back to Famau Cabins.

And we wouldn’t blame you.

Pick up some local ingredients, prepare an easy dinner or put together a cheese board and enjoy an evening with absolutely nowhere else to be.

All three of our cabins have private hot tubs, perfect for relaxing after a day exploring.

If you’re staying in Fenlli, there’s also a little wood-burning stove to make those cooler evenings feel especially cosy.

Bring a book, play a game of cards or settle down to watch a film.

Sometimes the simplest evenings are the best ones.

Sunday Morning: One Last Walk and a Slow Start

Sunday mornings on a countryside break are made for taking things slowly.

Wake up, enjoy a coffee and make the most of the peaceful surroundings before it’s time to head home.

If your departure plans allow, you could fit in another short walk or visit somewhere nearby before starting your journey.

Explore Loggerheads Country Park

If you haven’t already visited, Loggerheads Country Park is a lovely choice for a final outing.

With woodland paths, riverside scenery and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the autumn colours, it’s an ideal way to round off your weekend.

You could enjoy a gentle walk before stopping for a coffee or a bite to eat.

Make One Final Coffee Stop

Alternatively, take a little detour through Mold or Ruthin and enjoy one last visit to a local café.

There’s something quite nice about stretching out the weekend just a little longer.

And who knows? You might already be planning your next visit before you’ve even left North Wales.

What If It Rains During Your Autumn Weekend?

Let’s be realistic. Autumn in North Wales isn’t always sunshine and blue skies.

But a little rain doesn’t have to spoil your plans.

There are plenty of ways to enjoy the area when the weather is less than perfect.

You could:

  • Explore independent shops and cafés in Mold or Ruthin.
  • Visit Ruthin Craft Centre and discover its exhibitions.
  • Enjoy a leisurely lunch at a local café or pub.
  • Take a scenic drive through the surrounding countryside.
  • Head back to your cabin, make a hot drink and enjoy a slower afternoon indoors.

Sometimes a rainy afternoon with a good book and nowhere to be is exactly what you needed.

Just remember to check weather conditions before setting out on longer walks, particularly on exposed hills.

Why the Clwydian Hills Are Perfect for a Short Break

You don’t always need to travel far to feel like you’ve properly escaped.

For visitors from Manchester, Liverpool, Chester and the surrounding areas, the Clwydian Hills offer beautiful countryside, walking adventures and charming Welsh towns without needing to plan a long holiday.

It’s an area where you can do as much or as little as you like.

Spend your days exploring the hills, discovering independent businesses and enjoying local food.

Or simply settle into your cabin, enjoy the views and make the most of a few peaceful days away.

That’s the beauty of a countryside break.

You can make it entirely your own.
