September Breaks in North Wales | Famau Cabins
The school holidays might be drawing to a close, but summer in the Clwydian Hills certainly isn’t.
September is one of our favourite times of year here at Famau Cabins. The busiest weeks of the summer are behind us, the walking trails become quieter again and there are still plenty of opportunities to enjoy long days outdoors.
For couples, walkers and anyone with the flexibility to travel outside the school holidays, it can be one of the best times to book a North Wales break.
Add better value midweek stays, greater availability and peaceful evenings in your own private hot tub, and September starts to look very tempting indeed.
Enjoy a Quieter Side of North Wales
July and August are understandably popular months for visiting North Wales. Once September arrives and children return to school, however, the pace begins to change.
Popular walking routes become quieter, local attractions are generally more peaceful and there’s a little more room to slow down and explore at your own pace.
That’s particularly lovely here in the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley National Landscape, an area of dramatic summits, historic towns, Welsh villages and beautiful countryside. You can find plenty of inspiration for exploring the area on the official Clwydian Range and Dee Valley National Landscape website.
For guests looking for peace rather than packed itineraries, September ticks a lot of boxes.
Make the Most of Better Value Midweek Stays
If your schedule allows you to escape Sunday to Thursday, September is a fantastic time to consider a midweek break in North Wales.
Outside the peak school holiday period, midweek stays can offer better value than the busiest summer dates, as well as greater availability.
There’s also something rather nice about arriving when everyone else is heading back to their usual routines.
Imagine waking to views across the fields, enjoying breakfast without rushing anywhere, heading into the hills for a walk and returning for an evening in the hot tub.
No school run. No Monday morning commute. Just a few days to switch off.

September is Made for Walking
For walkers, September can be a wonderful time to explore the Clwydian Hills.
The heat of high summer begins to ease, yet there is still useful daylight for getting outdoors. As always in North Wales, conditions can change quickly, so checking the forecast and packing suitable layers is essential.
Moel Famau, the highest point in the Clwydian Range, is right on our doorstep and remains one of the area’s must-do adventures.
The surrounding Coed Moel Famau area also offers a choice of walking trails. You can find route information and advice before setting off through Natural Resources Wales.
Discover a Stretch of Offa’s Dyke Path
September is also a great time to discover Offa’s Dyke Path.
The 177-mile National Trail travels from Sedbury Cliffs near Chepstow to Prestatyn and passes through the spectacular Clwydian Range. Don’t worry, you certainly don’t need to walk all 177 miles!
Many visitors choose individual sections or shorter walks to experience the trail and its scenery.
The official Offa’s Dyke Path National Trail guide includes maps, route information and ideas for shorter walks to help you plan your adventure.
Explore Beyond the Walking Trails
Of course, a stay in North Wales doesn’t have to involve walking from dawn until dusk.
Famau Cabins are well placed for exploring nearby Mold, Ruthin and Denbigh, where you’ll find independent shops, cafés, pubs, restaurants and plenty of Welsh character.
Closer to home, we also have a local pub and village shop within walking distance.
A slow morning, a wander around a market town, a good pub lunch and an afternoon back at the cabin can be every bit as enjoyable as reaching a summit.
Hot Tub Evenings Hit Differently in September
We love a summer hot tub, but there’s something particularly lovely about slipping into warm water when there’s just a little chill beginning to creep into the evening air.
All three of our cabins have their own private hot tubs and decking overlooking the countryside.
Watch the light change over the hills, pour yourself a drink and enjoy the simple pleasure of having nowhere else to be.
For couples, Fenlli Cabin makes a particularly cosy retreat for two and also has its own small wood-burning stove.
Alternatively, Famau Cabin and Arthur Cabin offer a little more space while keeping that same peaceful farm setting.
A Simple Base for Exploring North Wales
We’re not about bells and whistles.
Famau Cabins are rustic, charming and comfortable places to put your feet up after a day outdoors. We’re situated on our working family farm, surrounded by fields and sheep, with the Clwydian Hills providing the backdrop.
You can cook breakfast in your own kitchen, pull on your walking boots and head out exploring before returning for a cwtch, a home-cooked meal and a soak in the hot tub.
Sometimes simple really is best.
