A Walking Break in North Wales: Your Guide to Exploring the Clwydian Hills from Famau Cabins

Walking boots by the door. A flask in your backpack. Fresh Welsh air and miles of countryside waiting outside.

If that sounds like your kind of escape, you’ve come to the right place.

Famau Cabins sit on our working family farm at the foot of Moel Famau, surrounded by the beautiful Clwydian Hills. For walkers, hikers and couples who simply enjoy spending time outdoors, it’s a fantastic base for a walking break in North Wales.

And September? It might just be one of the best times to do it.

Why September is Perfect for a Walking Break

As the school summer holidays finish, a little calm returns to the countryside.

September offers walkers an opportunity to explore outside the busiest summer period while still making the most of the season. The trails are generally quieter, there are fewer family holiday crowds and midweek accommodation availability begins to open up again.

The changing season also gives the landscape a slightly different feel.

We’re not quite into those crisp autumn mornings yet, but there’s a hint of what’s to come, making it a lovely transitional month for pulling on your boots and heading outside.

Start with Moel Famau

It would be impossible to talk about walking holidays here without starting with Moel Famau.

At 554 metres, it’s the highest point in the Clwydian Range and one of the most recognisable landmarks in North East Wales.

At the summit you’ll find the remains of the Jubilee Tower, while the surrounding landscape rewards walkers with far-reaching views when conditions are clear.

There are different routes and trails around the area, so you don’t necessarily need to tackle the biggest climb to enjoy Moel Famau.

Before setting off, take a look at the Coed Moel Famau visitor information from Natural Resources Wales and choose a route suited to your experience and the day’s conditions.

Explore More of the Clwydian Hills

Moel Famau might get much of the attention, but there’s far more to the Clwydian Range than one summit.

The surrounding National Landscape includes dramatic peaks, wooded valleys, historic hillforts, Welsh villages and miles of countryside waiting to be explored.

The Clwydian Range and Dee Valley National Landscape walking guide is a useful place to discover everything from shorter walks to longer-distance routes.

There are even waymarked Community Miles routes around villages including Llandyrnog, Tremeirchion, Graigfechan and Llangynhafal, giving you plenty of inspiration if you fancy discovering somewhere new.

Experience Offa’s Dyke Path

For something a little more adventurous, why not spend part of your stay walking a section of Offa’s Dyke Path National Trail?

The complete route stretches for 177 miles between Sedbury Cliffs near Chepstow and Prestatyn, passing through the Clwydian Range on its journey along the Welsh-English border.

Thankfully, you don’t have to walk the whole thing!

The official National Trails website recommends shorter circular and linear walks for those wanting a taste of the route, making it easy to incorporate Offa’s Dyke into a short North Wales walking break.

Use the official Offa’s Dyke Path interactive map and trail information to start planning.

Not Every Walk Needs to Be a Challenge

A walking holiday doesn’t need to mean chasing summits every day.

Some days call for a gentler wander through woodland, a village walk or simply exploring somewhere new before finding a pub for lunch.

The National Landscape offers a mixture of challenging long-distance routes and shorter walks, so you can tailor each day to your mood, ability and energy levels.

You could tackle Moel Famau one morning and spend the next taking things much more slowly.

That’s the beauty of having a few days rather than trying to squeeze everything into one.

Walk. Pub. Hot Tub. Repeat.

We might be biased, but we think we’ve found a pretty good recipe for a North Wales break.

🥾 Start with a morning in the hills.

🥪 Pack a picnic or stop somewhere for lunch.

🍺 Call into a local pub on the way home.

🛁 Sink into your private hot tub.

🌄 Watch the evening settle over the countryside.

Our local pub and village shop are within walking distance, while nearby Mold, Ruthin and Denbigh offer plenty more options for food, drinks and exploring.

No complicated itinerary required.

Your Base at the Foot of the Hills

After spending hours outdoors, you don’t necessarily need somewhere fancy. You need somewhere comfortable to take your boots off, cook a good meal and relax.

That’s exactly what we aim to offer.

All three Famau Cabins have their own kitchens, living spaces, private decking and hot tubs, surrounded by views of the Welsh countryside.

For two people, Fenlli Cabin offers a cosy base complete with a small wood-burning stove.

Famau Cabin and Arthur Cabin offer additional space, sleeping up to four guests.

We’re rustic, relaxed and located on a real working farm. You’ll see sheep in the surrounding fields and plenty of reminders that you’re staying in the Welsh countryside.

Why Book a Midweek Walking Break?

If you have the flexibility, we’d always recommend looking at our midweek availability.

Once the school holidays finish, Sunday to Thursday breaks can offer particularly good value, and exploring popular walking destinations outside the weekend often means a quieter experience too.

It gives you time to properly settle in rather than rushing to squeeze a walk, dinner and hot tub into one night.

5 Things to Pack for a Walking Break in the Clwydians

1. Good Walking Footwear

Choose supportive, comfortable footwear suitable for the route you’re planning.

2. Waterproofs

Even when the forecast looks promising, pack a waterproof. Welsh weather likes to keep us on our toes!

3. Layers

Temperatures can feel very different on exposed hills compared with sheltered valleys.

4. Water and Snacks

Always carry enough water and something to keep your energy levels up.

5. A Map or Downloaded Route

Phone signal can vary in rural areas. Plan your route beforehand and don’t rely solely on having mobile data.
