48 Hours at Famau Cabins: The Perfect North Wales Itinerary

Sometimes you don’t need a week away to properly switch off.

Give us 48 hours in the Clwydian Hills and we’ll fill them with fresh Welsh air, beautiful walks, good food, local exploring and plenty of time to do absolutely nothing at all.

Situated on our working family farm at the foot of Moel Famau, Famau Cabins make a peaceful base for a short break in North Wales. You can explore straight from the heart of the Clwydians, visit nearby market towns, discover local pubs and cafés and still be back in time for a soak in your private hot tub.

So, bags packed and walking boots at the ready. Here’s how we’d spend the perfect 48 hours at Famau Cabins.

Day One: Arrive, Unpack and Slow Down

Afternoon: Croeso i Famau Cabins

Your first job when you arrive?

Slow down.

Unpack the car, settle into your cabin and take a moment to appreciate where you are. We’re surrounded by fields, sheep and views of the Welsh countryside, so life here moves at a slightly different pace.

Choose from our three cabins:

Famau Cabin sleeps up to four and is ideal for two adults with up to two children.

Arthur Cabin also sleeps up to four, giving couples or small families a little more space.

Fenlli Cabin sleeps two and has a small wood-burning stove, making it particularly lovely for a cosy couples’ escape.

All three have their own kitchen, living space, private decking and hot tub.

Put the kettle on, sit outside with a cuppa and let the holiday begin.

Late Afternoon: Stretch Your Legs

After travelling, you might not fancy tackling a summit straight away.

Instead, use your first afternoon to get your bearings. Take a gentle walk locally, enjoy the countryside around the cabins or head towards Coed Moel Famau for one of its shorter woodland routes.

Natural Resources Wales manages several waymarked trails here, ranging from a short accessible trail and easy woodland walks to longer routes through the forest.

You can explore the latest routes and visitor information through Natural Resources Wales’ guide to Coed Moel Famau

Evening: Dinner, Drinks and Your First Hot Tub

For dinner, keep things simple.

You can bring ingredients and cook together in your fully equipped kitchen, or head out and discover one of the pubs or restaurants in the surrounding area. We also have a local pub and village shop within walking distance, perfect when you’d rather leave the car behind.

Then it’s back to the cabin for one of our favourite parts of any stay.

Hot tub. Drink in hand. Countryside views.

That’s your first evening sorted. 🛁

Day Two: The Big Adventure

Morning: Breakfast Before the Hills

Start the day slowly with breakfast at the cabin.

Make coffee, cook something in the kitchen and fuel up for the day’s adventure. If the weather is kind, take breakfast outside onto your private decking and enjoy the views before pulling on your walking boots.

Today we’re heading up Moel Famau

Morning to Lunchtime: Conquer Moel Famau

At 554 metres, Moel Famau is the highest summit in the Clwydian Range and one of the best-known walks in North East Wales.

The Jubilee Tower Circular from Coed Moel Famau is graded moderate by Natural Resources Wales and is approximately 3.6 miles/5.8km, with an estimated walking time of around 2½ hours. The steady climb leads to the remains of the Jubilee Tower and, when the weather plays nicely, spectacular views across North Wales and towards North West England.

You’ll also be stepping onto part of Offa’s Dyke Path, the famous National Trail which crosses the summit of Moel Famau.

Check current trail information, weather and conditions before setting out and always choose a route appropriate to your ability.

Lunchtime: You’ve Earned It

After a few hours on the hills, lunch will be calling.

You could pack a picnic and find somewhere scenic to stop along the way, pick something up locally or reward yourself with a proper pub lunch.

If coffee and cake sound more appealing, you’ll also find plenty of independent cafés and places to eat around nearby Mold, Ruthin and Denbigh

And watch this space: we’re putting together a separate guide to some of our favourite local spots for coffee, cake and lunch.

Afternoon: Explore a Little More… or Don’t!

This is where we’re giving you a choice.

Option A: Keep exploring.

Spend the afternoon discovering one of our nearby market towns. Ruthin, Mold and Denbigh each have their own character, with independent shops, historic streets and plenty of places to stop for a drink or something to eat.

Option B: Head home.

You’re on holiday. You don’t have to squeeze another attraction into the itinerary.

Go back to your cabin, put your feet up, make a coffee and enjoy a lazy afternoon overlooking the fields.

Sometimes that’s exactly what’s needed.

Evening: Walk. Pub. Hot Tub. Repeat.

After a full day exploring, there’s really only one thing for it.

A good meal, a local drink and another soak in the hot tub.

As the light begins to fade over the Clwydian Hills, sit back and enjoy having nowhere else you need to be.

During late summer and September, this can be particularly lovely. The school holiday crowds have eased, the days can still be perfect for exploring and the evenings are beginning to feel just that little bit cooler.

Warm hot tub + cool Welsh evening = a pretty good combination, if you ask us.

Day Three: One Last Slow Morning

Morning: Coffee, Countryside and No Rush

You’ve got one morning left, so don’t waste it rushing.

Put the kettle on, make breakfast and enjoy one last coffee overlooking the countryside.

Depending on your plans for the journey home, you could squeeze in a gentle woodland walk, visit the village shop or call somewhere locally for brunch.

Or simply stay put until it’s time to leave.

Because a good getaway shouldn’t leave you needing another holiday to recover from it.

Want to Extend Your Adventure?

If 48 hours doesn’t feel quite enough, there’s plenty more to discover.

You could spend another day exploring sections of Offa’s Dyke Path, which passes through the Clwydian Range and crosses the summit of Moel Famau. The full National Trail stretches for 177 miles, but shorter sections allow you to experience the landscape without committing to the entire route.

You could also explore more of the area’s woodland, villages and market towns or simply give yourself an extra day with absolutely no plans.

That’s allowed too.
